So Close, Yet So Far Away

Posted by on Jun 17, 2010 | 2 comments

I was so close … so close! :( Arrrrrrrghhhhhh. But I’ll get to that later. Let’s start at the beginning, with breakfast.

OIANJ!

1/3 cup oats-soymilk-water + 1/2 banana + 1 tbsp chia, topped with the other half of the banana, some walnuts and a sprinkle of chia for a little extra pretty. I pretty much scraped the jar clean when I finished it a few days ago, so I’m not sure if there was even a tablespoon of Nutella left.

Today at work we had a company barbecue for lunch, so as a member of the Fun Club, I got to spend the day setting up tables of food and chopping pretty salads. It was actually pretty fun (mostly because I love cooking/entertaining), so the day flew by :) During a break in duties I had a veggie burger with a little bit of mayo + bbq sauce, salad, fruit and a couple sweet treats.

I wasn’t planning on having a second plate, but I have a huge cookie weakness, so I just had to go back for a cookie. It was so worth it though! I heart cookies.

I had some more fruit with my cookie, and snacked on the fruit that was leftover throughout the afternoon. I also ate a Mini S’mores Luna Bar that I brought from home (but didn’t take a picture of).

After work I went to a Body Combat class at my gym, but I was a little underwhelmed. I know it’s not the instructor that was the problem because I love her Body Pump class – I think I’m just not really a martial arts/boxing-kinda girl. After 15 minutes I kept checking the clock to see how much time was left, which is the worst feeling during a class! I want exercise to be something I enjoy doing, so I think I’ll stick to my favourites for now :)

After class I picked up some groceries to make my dad’s Father’s Day meal with (he asked me to make Cheesy Chicken, so I’m gonna pop everything in the slow cooker tomorrow and let it simmer all day and get niiiice and tender), and ended up getting some other unplanned shopping done as well.

Is that a new blender!? Yes it is!! There’s also a new dress that I found at Mango for half price that I had to buy because it was super cute and made me feel like Satsuki from My Neighbor Totoro. And did I mention that it was half price?

Can you see the dress resemblance?

But anyway, back to the blender. I was so excited to try it out and see if I finally had a blender that could actually blend stuff (what a foreign concept, eh?) so I got out the blender, disassembled it, and washed it with some warm soapy water. Then I went to screw the bottom back on, and – CRACK. Apparently when the plastic was molded, the extra wasn’t shaved off properly on one side, and screwing the bottom back on caught it the wrong way and cracked the bottom.

:( It’s almost like I was never meant to have a working blender.

The crack was super tiny, though, so I decided to go ahead anyway. I bought a blender, so I’m going to blend, goddammit!! I added in some frozen cherries, half a banana, a scoop of chocolate protein and some cold water, and let it do it’s thing.

It looked good so far, but still needed to pass the real test.

Would it blend ice?

Yes! No ice chunks!

Smoothie perfection. The blender didn’t even leak or anything, but I think I still need to take it back and get one that was molded properly tomorrow. I didn’t really want to take another trip to the mall, but I’d rather have a blender. Hopefully they let me exchange it. At least now I know that it works great, and I can look forward to blended foods :)

I enjoyed my smoothie. A lot. I also enjoyed obscene amounts of fresh cherries and cinnamon sugar pita chips.

I think I enjoyed the pita chips a little too much, because the bag ended up being my dinner throughout the night  I’d been eyeing the chips in the store for weeks now, and I knew I was walking a dangerous line by buying them. At least they had a very simple ingredients list, and were delicious.

So close to the weekend! See you all tomorrow on my favourite day of the week :)

Barbecue Take 2

Before our trip to the park I had a Kashi bar, just so I wouldn’t be starving by the time we got home.

The park was really fun – we fed ducks and watched people meditating in the shady areas. we had a really good time just walking around, but ended up not staying for too long because I started getting a serious headache.

Dinner was barbecue again, because who can resist when the weather is so beautiful out? This time we cooked up a package of chili-lime pork chops that I found in the freezer.

Barbecue isn’t complete without chips + beer.

I’m such a tool.

Almost done!

With the pork chops, we had white + brown rice mixed together, some of the leftover grilled veggies from yesterday, and some frozen mixed veggies. And beer (of course) ;)

I decided that the beautiful weather also called for an ice cream run. I had planned on going to Marble Slab, but on the way home from the pack we passed a Cold Stone Creamery, which I didn’t even know existed in Canada! It was much closer than Marble Slab and I’ve never been to one, so we decided to come back later that night.

I tend to be exasperatingly indecisive, so these kinds of “make your own mix” places are the death of me. The choice today was a little easier though, because I’ve been drooling over Jenna’s ice cream since I saw it the other day, so I got the exact same thing – cake batter with oreo and caramel sauce.

It was delicious!! I love ice cream so much.

My drive back to Toronto was a little rough with the post-ice cream sugar crash, and I’m fighting off sleep right now. I can’t say that I’m excited that the long weekend is over, but it’s one day closer to Friday than usual, right?

What’s your favourite flavour of ice cream?

(Mine is candy cane! It’s only available at Christmas though)

May Two-Four

Officially, this long weekend is in celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday, but everyone knows that it’s really about the beer.

As a salute to the beginning of the summer season, we broke out the barbecue and grilled up some bacon-wrapped filet mignon, because we’re fancy like that ;) We also made up a bunch of sides to satisfy everyone and ensure that my dad had plenty of leftovers – baked potatoes, grilled veggies, roasted asparagus and mushrooms. Nate and I ate outside because it was so nice out, but my dad opted to stay inside where there were no mosquitos.

Dinner + beer #2. Note: my baked potato was topped with plain greek yogurt, and fresh chives from our garden :)

Nate hates asparagus and mushrooms, but he loved the filet mignon.

After dinner we finished watching Avatar, because I fell asleep near the end when we watched it last night. I really liked it! A friend described it to me as “Pocahontas + Ferngully with blue people”, and she was so right

During the movie we had some fresh fruit for dessert, and I fiddled with the white balance on my camera -

And there might have been some chips involved (without white balance) -

My stomach hates me :( I promise I’ll treat it better tomorrow!
