So Close, Yet So Far Away

Posted by on Jun 17, 2010 | 2 comments

I was so close … so close! :( Arrrrrrrghhhhhh. But I’ll get to that later. Let’s start at the beginning, with breakfast.

OIANJ!

1/3 cup oats-soymilk-water + 1/2 banana + 1 tbsp chia, topped with the other half of the banana, some walnuts and a sprinkle of chia for a little extra pretty. I pretty much scraped the jar clean when I finished it a few days ago, so I’m not sure if there was even a tablespoon of Nutella left.

Today at work we had a company barbecue for lunch, so as a member of the Fun Club, I got to spend the day setting up tables of food and chopping pretty salads. It was actually pretty fun (mostly because I love cooking/entertaining), so the day flew by :) During a break in duties I had a veggie burger with a little bit of mayo + bbq sauce, salad, fruit and a couple sweet treats.

I wasn’t planning on having a second plate, but I have a huge cookie weakness, so I just had to go back for a cookie. It was so worth it though! I heart cookies.

I had some more fruit with my cookie, and snacked on the fruit that was leftover throughout the afternoon. I also ate a Mini S’mores Luna Bar that I brought from home (but didn’t take a picture of).

After work I went to a Body Combat class at my gym, but I was a little underwhelmed. I know it’s not the instructor that was the problem because I love her Body Pump class – I think I’m just not really a martial arts/boxing-kinda girl. After 15 minutes I kept checking the clock to see how much time was left, which is the worst feeling during a class! I want exercise to be something I enjoy doing, so I think I’ll stick to my favourites for now :)

After class I picked up some groceries to make my dad’s Father’s Day meal with (he asked me to make Cheesy Chicken, so I’m gonna pop everything in the slow cooker tomorrow and let it simmer all day and get niiiice and tender), and ended up getting some other unplanned shopping done as well.

Is that a new blender!? Yes it is!! There’s also a new dress that I found at Mango for half price that I had to buy because it was super cute and made me feel like Satsuki from My Neighbor Totoro. And did I mention that it was half price?

Can you see the dress resemblance?

But anyway, back to the blender. I was so excited to try it out and see if I finally had a blender that could actually blend stuff (what a foreign concept, eh?) so I got out the blender, disassembled it, and washed it with some warm soapy water. Then I went to screw the bottom back on, and – CRACK. Apparently when the plastic was molded, the extra wasn’t shaved off properly on one side, and screwing the bottom back on caught it the wrong way and cracked the bottom.

:( It’s almost like I was never meant to have a working blender.

The crack was super tiny, though, so I decided to go ahead anyway. I bought a blender, so I’m going to blend, goddammit!! I added in some frozen cherries, half a banana, a scoop of chocolate protein and some cold water, and let it do it’s thing.

It looked good so far, but still needed to pass the real test.

Would it blend ice?

Yes! No ice chunks!

Smoothie perfection. The blender didn’t even leak or anything, but I think I still need to take it back and get one that was molded properly tomorrow. I didn’t really want to take another trip to the mall, but I’d rather have a blender. Hopefully they let me exchange it. At least now I know that it works great, and I can look forward to blended foods :)

I enjoyed my smoothie. A lot. I also enjoyed obscene amounts of fresh cherries and cinnamon sugar pita chips.

I think I enjoyed the pita chips a little too much, because the bag ended up being my dinner throughout the night  I’d been eyeing the chips in the store for weeks now, and I knew I was walking a dangerous line by buying them. At least they had a very simple ingredients list, and were delicious.

So close to the weekend! See you all tomorrow on my favourite day of the week :)

Visiting the Farmer’s Market

Posted by on May 30, 2010 | 2 comments

What’s the best part about the farmer’s market in May?

Cherries! I’m not ashamed to say that I bought $16 worth of cherries, and that every single one was worth it. I also picked up some other fresh produce – corn on the cob, cherry tomatoes, peaches and a pineapple. My wonderful boyfriend offered to carry it all for me.

He’s the best ;)

The weather was gorgeous and we spent the morning wandering around the stalls, looking at delicious pies and eating summer sausage samples and listening to the buskers play music.

We saw a lot of people walking around with these drinks with fresh fruit in them, and they looked so good, especially because it was so hot outside. We went to investigate, and found a lemonade stand serving fresh-squeezed juice -

We split a small, and obviously it was terrible and we both hated it, and didn’t secretly wish we’d gotten a large instead ;)

After we headed inside, and I decided that I finally wanted to brave the apple fritter line, and try one of the famous Fritter Co. donuts. I’ve been to the market a million times, but the line is always so long and there’s so many other delicious things to eat that I don’t want to wait. But not today!

Mmm, the fritters were delicious – the inside was a ring of apple and it was battered and deep fried, and then rolled in a combination of cinnamon and sugar. Although I’m a fan of big, doughy fritters with chunks of caramelized apple, these didn’t disappoint, and I enjoyed having the extra apple inside. I’m not sure if I’d wait in line again, but I’m glad I finally got to try them :)

After our sugary breakfast we were pretty much marketed out, so we headed home to work on the assignment we have for the professional development course we’re both taking. I broke out the cherries as soon as we were in the door, and we enjoyed a big dish of them as we worked.

Love.

I got lazy for the rest of the day and didn’t end up photographing anything, but it wasn’t much of an exciting food day – our plans for patio beers fell through, and dinner ended up being later than usual.

Today is a new day, though, and I’m feeling better and more refreshed. After a good night’s sleep, Nate and I had a beautiful breakfast on the back patio overlooking his family’s garden (which is gorgeous).

The weather is gorgeous today too, so hopefully I’ll find myself outside.
