Cooking on the Cheap Workshop

Hello and happy Tuesday to all of you out there!

This is the worst day of my week this term, with classes from early in the morning to late at night, so instead of my boring campus meals and wheezy 2.5km run, I have a recap of an event I held last week.

I’m the Cooking Director for my school’s engineering society, and part of my job is so hold student workshops. For my first workshop I chose a theme of Cooking on the Cheap, and put together a menu that I hoped would help students make easy and delicious meals even while on a strict budget.

I had a pretty good turnout, and everyone was really excited to get cooking. Our menu was black bean burgers, sweet potato salad, and regular garden salad with assorted dressings. I also got some cans of all-natural fruit juice, and a box of fudgesicles for dessert (who doesn’t love a fudgesicle on a hot day?).

After washing our hands, we got right to the cooking.

We had a bunch of people chopping,

people mixing up the burger ingredients,

frying up the black bean burgers,

chilling with friends,

and enjoying delicious food.

I was busy running around grabbing measuring cups for people, taking the lids of cans, and etc :) Wearing my apron of course.

The finished product turned out great, and everyone really seemed to enjoy the meal, even though it didn’t contain any meat.

I’m really excited to hold my next workshop, which is going to be sushi making! Hopefully just as many people come out for good times and good food :)

Goodbye to Susan

I met Susan last spring when we were both looking for someone to room with at the Healthy Living Summit. After 16 hours together in a car and plenty of lunch dates in Toronto, I’ve gotten the chance to know her a lot better. Unfortunately, this is her last week in the city before moving back home, and I knew that I had to see her one last time before she left.

After so many get togethers here, it seemed appropriate that our last meal together was at Fresh :)

I met her and Morgan for one last dinner together.

I love the juices at Fresh, and they had a new special with banana, dates, ginger, cinnamon, apples, chia seeds and soymilk, which I couldn’t turn down. It was just as delicious as it sounded :)

I got the Mega Life Salad for my meal, which was delicious except for the fact that they forgot to add the nuts! I kept eating and expecting to get to them, but it never happened :( I didn’t mind too much because the salad was huge and I couldn’t finish it as is, but it would’ve been nice to have a little extra crunch. In any case, it’s pretty hard to dislike any food from Fresh ;)

After our meal we headed over to Menchie’s for froyo, because I can’t go downtown without stopping for some. I think I’m officially addicted to frozen yogurt.

IMG_2106.jpg

I definitely belong in Menchiewood. I might have the highest number of visits to Menchie’s in all of Toronto ;)

My froyo today was like a “banana split on crack”, as I described it to Morgan. Original tart, cake batter and vanilla froyo with banana slices, mochi, chocolate chips, sprinkles and a maraschino cherry. So good! <3

Susan went in the opposite direction and made a chocolatey s’mores creation (which also looked delicious!), and Morgan just had a few samples because she was so full from dinner.

It was great being able to see Susan at least one more time before she heads back out east, and hopefully I’ll be able to see her again sooner rather than later :) I’ll miss you, Susan!
