Velvet Dessert

Hello from Buffalo!

We had a long day of driving and shopping, but thanks to the nap I took in the car, I’m currently much more awake than my mom. We ended up having about an extra 2 hours or so added to the drive because we had to pick up my mom’s passport from Toronto, and we ran into bad traffic on the highway due to an accident. Luckily we stopped at a Starbucks before leaving town, because I was super thirsty.

IMG_7271.JPG

Pumpkin spice is back! :D I was too thirsty to order something hot or creamy, so I asked for an iced black tea with a pump of pumpkin spice, and somehow along the line the order got turned into an iced black tea pumpkin spice latte… I think? I wasn’t really sure what it was, but I rolled with it and it was actually pretty good. More refreshing than a regular latte, but still spicy and pumpkin-y :)

The drink held me over okay until we hit traffic, and by the time we made it to Toronto it was already late afternoon and I was starrrving! Luckily, the other day I spotted a Panera Bread in Mississauga, and when my mom said she was in the mood for sandwiches I was all over suggesting it. I’ve seen this place floating around in the blog world, and was just looking for an opportunity to try it.

IMG_7272.JPG

I got a chicken salad sandwich on sesame bread, and managed to take a few pictures before I inhaled it.

IMG_7273.JPG

The chicken salad was loaded with grapes and almonds – yum!

IMG_7274.JPG

And there was a pickle! I really liked the sandwich from Panera, and I loved how their soft drink dispenser had free still + sparkling water with lemon wedges.

IMG_7276.JPG

I also loved how you could choose an apple as your side, because I love apples! The only complaint was that I was really in the mood for a veggie sandwich, but the only one they had was a mediterranean veggie sandwich with roasted peppers (blech), and they didn’t have anything like chickpeas that could be subbed for meat in another sandwich. Other than that I really wish I had one of these closer to me, because I’d definitely be a frequent customer!

Lunch was followed by several hours of driving, which wasn’t too bad considering we barely had a wait at the border. I finally got the chance to use my Nexus card to cross at the Whirlpool Bridge, and it was AWESOME crossing in just a few minutes with almost zero wait time! We headed over to the Buffalo Outlets for my mom, and ended up leaving with some stylish clothes for her, and 10 bars of Lindt chocolate for me

IMG_7277.JPG

And we got free samples in the Lindt store. Free chocolate is the best kind! ;)

Afterwards we hit up Target, and headed over to Cheesecake Factory for dinner.

Double <3 tropical iced tea!

It always seems like I alternate my menu choices at Cheesecake Factory – one time I’ll go for my trusty favourite, and the next I’ll try something completely new. Last time was my favourites, so this time I opted for something different.

IMG_7294.JPG

To start, my mom and I shared the French Country Salad, which was mixed greens with goat cheese, beets, asparagus and candied pecans. We ordered the dressing on the side, and I was really glad that we did because the goat cheese was so creamy that I barely even needed the dressing.

IMG_7299.JPG

For my entree, I ordered the Bistro Shrimp Pasta, which was spaghettini with breaded shrimp, mushrooms, tomato and arugula in a basil-garlic-lemon cream sauce. I ask to sub non-breaded shrimp for breaded, and the dish was perfect. I love cream sauces, and this one tasted nice and light.

Obviously we had to order cheesecake as well ;) I was going to go with the chocolate Godiva cheesecake, but after looking at the menu I changed my mind last minute, for…

IMG_7305.JPG

The Red Velvet Cheesecake! I’ve never actually had red velvet cake before (I think it’s more common in the US than in Canada), but I’ve been dying to try it. I was a little disappointed that it just tasted like regular cake and didn’t have any special flavour to it, but it looked really pretty and went well with the layers of cheesecake and cream cheese frosting. Plus, now I can say that I’ve tried it :)

IMG_7309.JPG

Say “aaaaahhh” for cheesecake! ;)

I was stuffed, and ended up taking home part of my dinner and dessert. I can’t wait to eat the leftovers!

After some more driving around for breakfast supplies for the morning, we checked into the hotel for some much-needed sleep.

IMG_7315.JPG

I’m impressed by the sheer number of pillows on each bed – I have six just to myself! I might just spread them all out and roll around like a queen all night.

Right now I have a dress from the Urban Outfitters sale rack to mend, and then I’m going to check out the fitness room in the hotel so I can plan my morning for tomorrow. I’m hoping to get a workout in before we have to get going for the day, because I haven’t sweat since before I moved back for university (excluding the actual move itself, which was very sweaty).

Have a good night! :)

A Trip of Epic Proportions

An epic proportion of pictures, that is! Sit back, relax, and get ready for a million and one pictures, because I have a whole weekend in Buffalo and Niagara Falls to recap ;)

The trip started with a perfect breakfast courtesy of Nate -

IMG_5486.JPG

And then we were off on the road. Due to a couple wrong turns and a really long wait at the border, the drive took a little longer than anticipated so I’m glad we had lots of snacks to hold us over.

IMG_5492.JPG IMG_5493.JPG

IMG_5496.JPG

Bored but almost there!

IMG_5498.JPG

We spent the afternoon shopping at the Fashion Outlets and Nate got some nice shirts, but I didn’t have luck finding anything. I wasn’t worried though – I was more than willing to save my border allowance for groceries ;)

IMG_5504.JPG

I worked up an appetite with all the shopping and snacked on a Luna bar in the car as we drove to the Walden Galleria. After some more shopping and wandering around there (during which time a super cute dress was purchased!), it was time for dinner -

IMG_5509.JPG

At The Cheesecake Factory!! I know there are many people out there that aren’t huge CCF fans, but I love it and look forward to going every time I’m across the border. I’ve really liked everything I’ve ordered there, I like the atmosphere and everything is really reasonably priced. Plus they’re known for their dessert, so how can you say no? ;)

IMG_5552.JPG

Ohhhh yeeeeeeah.

IMG_5546.JPG

We started off the meal with my favourite bread -

IMG_5513.JPG

(The brown, oaty one – it’s so sweet!)

IMG_5529.JPG

IMG_5518.JPG

And a tropical iced tea

IMG_5528.JPG

IMG_5519.JPG

Nate had to look over the menu, but I decided to go with the tried and true.

IMG_5539.JPG

Sweet corn tamale cakes :) They’re so moist and flavourful and I love the salsa verde, mmmmmmmmm. It’s an “appetizer”, but it’s always more than enough for a full-sized meal for me. I actually only ended up eating a little less than half, so I made sure I got the rest packed up to eat later. We ended up not wanting dessert at the restaurant, but I got a piece of cheesecake to go and we shared a few bites in the hotel (which took about an hour and several miles of driving to find due to a huge lack of vacancies this weekend, but we don’t need to talk about that).

IMG_5555.JPG

Can’t go wrong with tuxedo cheesecake

The next morning after showering and packing up, we were ready for breakfast! And where do you go for breakfast in the States? ;)

IMG_5576.JPG

I have an obsession with the unsweetened iced tea they have south of the border.

IMG_5565.JPG

IMG_5571.JPG

I wish we could order it in restaurants here, but we only have what they refer to as “sweet tea” in the south. I know I can make it at home easily enough, but it’s just not quite the same :( I scoped out the “healthy” section but it seemed a little overpriced compared to the rest of the menu and I just wanted straight-up pancakes, so I went with the Harvest Grain N’ Nut Pancakes.

IMG_5570.JPG

IMG_5573.JPG

I love whipped butter!

IMG_5574.JPG

Nathan loves ketchup.

IMG_5568.JPG

After breakfast was what I came for – shopping at Target + Wegmans. I was hoping to find some cute sundresses at Target, but unfortunately nothing really caught my fancy. That might’ve been a good thing, because I ended up making a rather large purchase anyway ;) But I’ll talk about that in a bit.

The weather was gorgeous by this point, and we decided that we should head back to Canada and check out the butterfly conservatory like we’ve always talked about. I think this was one of the best ideas we’ve ever had, because I had a blast! All the butterflies were gorgeous, and it was so fun taking pictures together.

IMG_5681.JPG IMG_5660.JPG

We had some mad photography skills going on in the conservatory – I was climbing all over the rocks and Nathan was bent like a pretzel. We both made some pretty funny “concentration” faces too. I had almost as much fun taking photos of each other as the butterflies

IMG_5734.JPG

CSC_0154.jpg

We had some butterflies land on us too!

Cutest date ever!

DSC_0139_2.jpg

After the conservatory we were starving because it was already almost dinnertime, so we headed to the park outside and had some leftovers.

IMG_5720.JPG

IMG_5721.JPG

With a salad packed up from home, to make sure I got enough greens in me ;) I ended up deciding to save the cheesecake for the ride home, because we opted for a cold treat to keep us cool in the hot sun.

IMG_5722.JPG

I loved the chocolate-vanilla swirl flavour of soft serve when I was younger, and the Yogen Fruz at the conservatory had a frozen yogurt variety so I had to try it! The texture was really different than ice cream, but it was still good :)

After checking out the beautiful gardens, we headed to the main strip for some touristy shopping and photo-taking.

IMG_5725.JPG

After being to Niagara Falls about a million times, I finally made a purchase at the Hershey’s store! I just bought a bag of milk chocolate kisses (which is mostly gone now), but it made me feel like I could finally check it off my life’s “to do” list :)

DSC_0187.jpg

The falls were gorgeous -

IMG_5743.JPG

And there was even a rainbow!

IMG_5761.JPG

We had to start heading home because it was getting late, but unfortunately we hit a ton of traffic and were jammed for hours. I snacked on an apple, the leftover cheesecake, and a bunch of Hershey’s kisses as we anxiously waited for traffic to clear.

IMG_5776.JPG

I still had to drive back to Toronto after we got back to Nate’s house, and by the time I got home that night it was already 1 in the morning. I unpacked and got in bed as quickly as possible, but it still wasn’t a sufficient amount of sleep.

Today I woke up not feeling so great. My throat hurt, I had a headache, and I really just wanted to stay in bed and be miserable all day. Of course I had to drag my butt to work, but I wasn’t very happy about it.

IMG_5779.JPG

I made myself a chocolate + banana protein smoothie to sooth my throat, and brought it to work in the new travel mug I got from Wegmans. I left my cold travel cup at Nate’s house, so I need to remember to get it back :(

IMG_5777.JPG

Lunch was just stuff that could be thrown together really quickly, since I was short on time. Plain salad, a Vega bar, baby carrots, an apple, and -

IMG_5778.JPG

Blueberry Siggi’s with granola. This was another Wegmans purchase, and something I was really excited to try. For some reason I thought the Siggi’s would be like a fruit-bottom yogurt, so I was a little disappointed when it wasn’t like that. The texture and taste seemed a little strange at first and I wasn’t sure I liked it, but I think in the end I was a fan :) Yum!

IMG_5781.JPG

When I got home I could finally survey my American finds – chocolate calcium chews, Arnold sandwich thins (HLS sponsor!), Kashi cinnamon heart to heart and honey sunshine, MaraNatha dark chocolate almond butter, pumpernickel pretzels, two Clif Z-Bars and a coconut water tetra (as well as two remaining Siggi’s in the fridge). And the large purchase from Target?

IMG_5783.JPG

Candice had told me about the Waring Pro Juice Extractor she got from Target and gave it a very positive review, so I figured I should look into it while I was there. It was on sale for $50 ($10 off) when I looked at it, and I figured that it was very reasonably-priced for a juicer. I was thinking of buying a new dress for the Healthy Living Summit cocktail party which would be about $50 anyway, but I have a cute dress that I bought around Christmas that I’m pretty sure I could wear instead of going to the trouble of getting a new one, so I justified the purchase that way. Like it matters ;)

Even though I was a little nervous that the juicer wouldn’t live up to my expectations, I couldn’t help but be excited and basically cut up a little bit of everything to throw in.

IMG_5786.JPG

Not expecting much more than a trickle to come out, I flipped on the switch and got to juicing (after washing the unit, of course). When I pressed down on the feeder block, juice poured right out! I felt like I was actually in an infomercial!

IMG_5787.JPG

The juice was beautiful.

Inside and out.

IMG_5805.JPG

IMG_5806.JPG

First taste (excuse my rumpled look) -

IMG_5809.JPG

Oh. My gosh. It was delicious! A little zesty (note to self: half of a lemon was too much, and the amount of ginger was WAY too much) but it was soso satisfying. I honestly felt almost instantly less sick, and even now I feel so much better. I could see myself drinking juice n a regular basis – I’m already planning tomorrow’s! I was thinking maybe a green juice with celery, cucumber, spinach and apple? :) I’m so excited!

IMG_5812.JPG

I also ate about a million dates (medjool are better, but these are less than 1/2 the price) and some various forms of chocolate + carbs (mostly MaraNatha dark chocolate almond and Hershey’s kisses). I never had a real dinner, but I’m still feeling a little off and I definitely grazed enough over the evening.

I’m so sleepy now and it’s way past my bedtime, especially since I got so little sleep last night! I’ll leave you with these Operation Beautiful notes I posted on our trip – they give me this warm sense of happiness in my heart, and I hope they made someone else smile :)
