Froyo Heaven

Hello blog friends! How have you all been doing? :) I’ve been busy with life, which apparently wants to keep me on my toes.

IMG_1456.jpg

After bringing lunches that consist of nutella sandwiches, bits and pieces of random fruit, really old celery and chobani yogurts for a few days, I realized I needed to buckle down and get my shiz together. Along with no clean laundry, I had zero fresh produce at home, and knew that I needed to get out to a grocery story before I went insane.

I was supposed to be in the downtown area after work today, so I decided to head over to Whole Foods to get my shopping done and grab some dinner. All that was going through my head was leafy greens, tofu, beans and veggies, so the WF hot bar sounded like heaven. Cupcakes for breakfast seem like a good idea until this point.

It’s true that you shouldn’t shop while hungry – I put together the biggest salad I’ve ever gotten (double digit price, eek!).

IMG_1463.jpg

Shoyu tofu, sesame ginger kale, beans, grain salad, veggies… you can’t even see it all. It was awesome.

IMG_1467.jpg

I also had a peach kombucha with my salad. I remember not liking kombucha too much the first time I tried it, but for some reason I’m hooked now!

IMG_1473.jpg

Completely demolished. At first I didn’t think I was going to make it through the whole thing, but I did! And don’t worry – the red isn’t blood, just some beets that were hiding under everything else ;)

After my trip to WF, I had some other business to take care of in the city.

I passed by Menchie’s on the way to my Winterlicious blogger date last week, and almost had a heart attack. Menchie’s… in Toronto!? Finally, they’ve brought self-serve froyo stores to the great white north!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <—absolutely necessary to convey my sheer level of excitement

IMG_1484.jpg

The concept is simple: mix the flavours and toppings you want, weigh your creation, and pay based on weight. Easy, right?

IMG_1486.jpg

They had at least 10 flavours of froyo and sorbet to choose from, which you get to serve yourself from soft-serve dispensers.

IMG_1488.jpg

They also had a whole assortment of toppings you could add to your froyo.

IMG_1489.jpg

This included fresh fruit and sauces!

I loaded up at all the stations and basically created a monster froyo.

IMG_1481.jpg

I die. Seriously. Best froyo ever.

IMG_1483.jpg

I went absolutely insane with flavours and toppings. I had original tart, vanilla, chocolate, mocha, peanut butter, pina colada and cake batter froyo topped with cinnamon toast crunch (lovelovelove cereal for dessert!), mochi, chocolate and yogurt chips, sprinkles, toasted coconut and a maraschino cherry. Sounds ridiculous but was amazing, and only came out to about $5!!

My favourite flavours were tart, vanilla and peanut butter, although I also liked the pina colada and cake batter. I was surprised by how intense the flavours were – the mocha was almost to coffee-y for me! I also loved how you could add whatever toppings you wanted. The mix-and-match of flavours is perfect for an indecisive person like me!

Even though I do love MoRoCo, this is everything I always hoped and thought a froyo shop should be. I think I’m a Menchie’s girl now <3

So… who wants to go back with me? ;)

Fresh

Note: Gah, this failed to publish last night, but here it is now :(

Hello blog friends!

Today I enjoyed a night out after work. I figured that I could either head downtown right away and spend the time wandering around, or I could go home for about half an hour, and then spend the entire time in traffic, and I think you can guess which I went with ;)

I parked close to the restaurant, and then headed over to Whole Foods for a quick shopping trip. I was starving because I ate lunch a little early today, and the sample I had at WF just didn’t cut it. I picked up a plum and some graham crackers, and stopped in at Starbucks for an iced tea.

And then it was time to head over to meet up with my dinner dates at the Fresh on Bloor ;)

Over an hour after telling us that the wait would only be 20 more minutes, we were finally seated. The staff felt bad that we had to wait for so long, so they brought us some complimentary sweet potato fries.

IMG_6683.JPG

Can’t argue with that, right? ;)

I decided that I wanted the full “Fresh experience” for my first time, so I went with the prix-fixe menu they offer, which comes with a drink, a starter, a main salad/bowl and a cookie for $21.

IMG_6687.JPG

Because I make vegetable juice so often at home now, I decided to go with a fruit smoothie.

IMG_6685.JPG

Cherry blossom :)

IMG_6689.JPG

I chose the avocado and white bean dosas for my starter, and they were awesome! The filling was so creamy, and all the flavours worked perfectly together.

IMG_6693.JPG

Susan, Morgan, Kristin, me, Angela and Miranda were at the dinner tonight. We roped the girls sitting next to us into taking about a million pictures with all of our cameras – thanks neighbor-table girls! :)

IMG_6688.JPG

Can you guess which bowl I got?

IMG_6694.JPG

Bean sprouts, tomato, cuke, cilantro.

IMG_6699.JPG

A bed of brown rice, tofu and peanut sauce hiding underneath.

IMG_6696.JPG

Artfully placed chopsticks (loved!!).

IMG_6697.JPG

Sound familiar yet?

I got the Buddha Bowl, which was also awesome :) The peanut sauce was much spicier than I thought it would be, but it was still delicious and I managed to eat through the heat.

IMG_6701.JPG

Bahahaha ;)

IMG_6700.JPG

Bloggers in action!

IMG_6702.JPG

It turns out that they were out of cookies, but I got offered a cupcake instead. It looked just like those Hostess cream cupcakes! I fully intended to eat it there, but after taking one look at it, I knew that I was way too full and got it packed up to go.

Overall – I loved the food at Fresh and the servers were all really nice and helpful. The only thing that wasn’t so great was the wait, but from what I hear it’s pretty standard. I hope I’ll be able to make more visits here in the future, because I love the idea of healthy bowls :) I need to start creating these at home, too!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with my cupcake and the latest episode of Jersey Shore ;) Have a good night!
